Drift Browser Extension
Data Collection
Drift collects the following data, all of which is stored locally on your device
using Chrome's storage API:
- Widget settings — your widget layout, positions, and preferences
- Dock apps — custom apps you add to the dock (name, URL, icon)
- Weather preferences — your chosen city and temperature unit
- Search engine preference — your selected default search engine
- Wallpaper choice — your selected background wallpaper
- Appearance settings — search bar color, dark mode, click spark preferences
- Sound settings — typewriter sound volume levels
- Notes content — text entered in the Quick Notes widget
- Spotify playback data — currently playing track info from Spotify Web Player (title, artist,
album art, playback state)
Data Storage & Transmission
All settings and data are stored locally on your device using Chrome's storage
API. Drift does not send your personal information or stored data to any server. When you use certain features,
Drift makes limited API requests to provide functionality (see Third-Party Services below). These requests contain
only the data necessary to fulfill their function — such as coordinates for weather or a domain name for a favicon
— and no personal identifiers or stored settings are included.
Third-Party Services
Drift connects to the following external services to provide its features:
- BigDataCloud — receives raw coordinates (latitude and longitude) for reverse geocoding;
used only during automatic location detection, not during manual city entry
- Open-Meteo Weather API — receives either coordinates (auto-detect) or a city name (manual
entry) to fetch forecast data
- Open-Meteo Geocoding API — converts a manually entered city name to coordinates; only used
when a city is typed in rather than auto-detected
- Spotify Web Player — reads currently playing track information via a content script on
open.spotify.com
- Google Fonts — loads the Caveat handwriting font used in notes and widgets
- Google Favicon Service — fetches website icons for dock apps
- thesvg.org — static SVG app icons for the macOS-style dock (icon images only; no data is sent
to the server)
No personal data is sent to these services. Weather requests include only coordinates (auto-detect) or city
name (manual entry).
Permissions
The following permissions are required for Drift's core features:
- Storage — stores your settings, preferences, and widget data locally on your device
- Tabs — enables tab grouping and communication with content scripts
- Tab Groups — automatically organizes your tabs by website domain
- Downloads — detects active downloads to prevent auto-discarding tabs with in-progress
downloads
- Scripting — registers Dark Mode and Click Spark content scripts when you choose to enable
them
- Search — sends plain text queries to the user's default search engine via
chrome.search.query(); Drift does not override or persist any search engine preference
- Geolocation — auto-detects your location for the weather widget via BigDataCloud (reverse
geocoding) and Open-Meteo (forecast); coordinates are sent to both services during auto-detection (optional;
you can enter a city manually instead, which sends only the city name to Open-Meteo Geocoding)
Drift also accesses https://open.spotify.com/* to read now-playing data from the Spotify Web
Player for the Media Player widget.
The following permission is optional and only requested when you enable the associated feature:
- <all_urls> — allows Dark Mode and Click Spark to run on websites you visit
Content Scripts
- Spotify Widget (open.spotify.com only) — reads now-playing data from Spotify Web Player
- Click Spark (all websites, disabled by default) — adds click animation effects when enabled
- Dark Mode (all websites, disabled by default) — applies dark theme when enabled
Click Spark and Dark Mode are disabled by default and only activate when you
explicitly enable them in settings.
